How it makes money. A Bangladeshi general insurer writes premium, cedes part of each risk to re-insurers (which pay a commission back), sets aside a reserve for the unexpired part of each policy, and pays claims, agent commission and management expenses from the rest. The company states that it 'deals in Fire, Marine, Motor' and miscellaneous insurance [1 p.24]. The underwriting result is transferred to the profit and loss account, where interest on FDRs and treasury bonds is added. Note 3.11 states that 'No operating segment is applicable for the Company as required by IFRS 8: Operating Segments, as the Company has only one operating segment' [1 p.114].
